Victor Canera’s signature diamonds; Antique Cushion (left), Ideal Hearts (center) & European Round (right)
When it comes to customized jewelry and well-crafted designer settings, Victor Canera is probably one of the best kept secrets in the industry. His hand forged jewelry are made to extremely high standards in quality and often feature intricate detailing.
And it gets better; Victor also specializes in ideal cut diamonds that are optimized for light performance and beauty. This makes Victor Canera an awesome one-stop solution for exquisite bespoke jewelry; where you can handpick your own diamond and get a one-of-a-kind ring crafted to your exact specifications.
When buying a diamond, you need to understand that CUT is KING. This is because a diamond’s cut is the biggest factor in determining its appearance and beauty. A great cut can even help offset clarity flaws and color tints of the diamond; offering better value for your money!
That said, I’m pretty pleased with the cut quality presented by Victor Canera’s Ideal Hearts diamonds. In fact, I would rate them amongst some of the finest round brilliant cuts you can find in the market.
Let me explain why by reviewing a diamond listing selected randomly from his inventory.
Less than 1% of polished diamonds exhibit such a level of precision and craftsmanship.
One of the things I like about Victor Canera’s website is that it is easy to browse and you can get access to detailed information with ease. As you can see above, a magnified image (10X) of the diamond is provided and this allows you visualize exactly how the diamond looks like.
More importantly, Victor Canera’s Ideal Hearts are curated with a stringent process to ensure that only the best diamonds make the cut (pun intended). Check out the light return and performance of his diamonds under the ASET and idealscope below…
The ASET and Idealscope images indicate a diamond with excellent light return and sparkle!
Due to its romantic connotations, the branding of round cut diamonds as “hearts and arrows” has become a sales tool in the industry. And that’s where you run into prevalent problems with false advertising. Believe it or not, many uneducated consumers actually get duped during a sales pitch/presentation in jewelry stores.
To the uninitiated, almost all round diamonds exhibit some form of hearts and arrows patterning and look somewhat similar. However, the devil is always in the details. The problem I have with misrepresentation is that distorted patterns often get passed off as being the real thing!
Here’s a comparison chart to illustrate this…
The difference between Victor Canera’s Ideal Hearts and diamonds conveniently proclaimed by other vendors as “hearts and arrows” is visible proof. At VictorCanera.com, you can get high resolution images and tangible data to analyse a diamond’s cut precision for yourself.
Check out the sharp and well-defined patternings from the listing I reviewed…
Only the perfect combination of proportions and symmetry will yield crisp patterning.
When it comes to well-cut vintage diamonds, Victor Canera is undoubtedly one of the best vendors to begin your search. Using proprietary designs, Victor Canera’s signature diamonds are cut for maximum light return and precise craftsmanship.
The Canera Antique Cushion (CAC) diamond receives top honors for ideal light performance. Every single CAC diamond is cut to extreme precision and exhibits a bold looking scintillation pattern.
The Canera European Round (CER) is specially designed for optical performance while retaining a vintage charm. As you can see above, the diamond displays a pleasing optical symmetry resembling an “open flower” and intense light return.
Regardless of buying diamonds online or offline, a 100% money back guarantee policy is something mandatory I personally look out for. The rationale behind this is pretty simple; it tells me whether the vendor stands behind their product and puts you at zero risk.
Victor Canera offers a generous 21 days return period for you to inspect any purchased diamonds and jewelry. This will enable you to have sufficient time to view your jewelry in different environments and even show it off to your friends/family members.
The bottom line is, Victor wants you to be a satisfied customer. If you aren’t, you get your money back. Plain and simple. And it gets better; he will even cover the shipping expenses in the event of a return (for US customers). That goes to show how confident he is about his products.
For all purchases, shipping is free and your purchase is delivered securely via FedEx with insurance.
Victor Canera offers an upgrade plan for all his signature diamonds and I find his upgrade policy very generous. Unlike most other vendors who require a new purchase of at least 2 times the original purchase, Victor provides FULL credit towards a new diamond with equal or greater value.
This means if you bought an $8,000 diamond, you don’t have to spend at least $16,000 on your next purchase! You could simply top up $1,000 for a new $9,000 diamond if you want to.
Besides an awesome upgrade policy, Victor also offers a buyback policy where he will purchase the diamond back for a high percentage of its original value. Personally, this is a policy that I hope you never need to activate unless you run into serious marital or financial problems (touch wood!).
Note: The upgrade and buyback policies only apply to Victor Canera’s signature diamonds: Ideal Hearts, European Round and Antique Cushion. The Platinum Upgrade plan (for Ideal Hearts and European Rounds) gives you 100% credit towards any new diamond while the Gold upgrade plan (for Antique Cushion) gives you 100% credit towards any new fancy shaped diamond.
For your convenience, a “Suggested Retail Replacement Value” document is provided with each purchase you make. This is particularly useful if you intend to insure your jewelry.
To ensure that your jewelry is delivered and kept safely, Victor Canera provides an impressive ring box with protective outer packaging. Check it out below…
While most other jewelers create their jewelry through the use of CAD/CAM (computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing) and casting processes, Victor Canera’s jewelry are all made to order and hand-forged.
I know you are probably wondering “What’s the deal with hand-forging?” or “What’s the difference between hand forged jewelry compared to settings made via other processes?”.
For starters, hand forged jewelry allows you to achieve precise details (like filigree) and finishing that aren’t possible with CAD/CAM. And unlike the typical casting technique used in the majority of jewelry fabrication, hand forging yields a stronger, denser metal which is less likely to deform and have better scratch resistant properties.
Now, I’ve to be honest with you here. Victor Canera’s customized jewelry comes at a higher price and may not be suitable for everyone. However, if quality and craftsmanship are important factors to you, Victor is the best person for the job.
And let me tell you, that details matter especially when it comes to high end jewelry products. You will see that his jewelry are simply more beautiful and well-made compared to mass produced settings that are widely used in the market.
Check out some of his commissioned work below…
The Grymera setting is my personal favorite design from Victor Canera. Made with a tri-wire shank, the splendid curves of the ring gives it an aura of elegance and is attractively feminine.
The clever use of wire shanks gives the diamond a more intense look as there is less metal surrounding it. Finally, the cross bars on the shanks are pave-set with vintage cut diamonds to add a subtle touch of class.
Halo rings are Victor Canera’s specialty and he makes them with unrivaled beauty and precision. Want to know what’s the secret to his impeccable workmanship? Well, it boils down to 2 crucial factors; time and patience.
Every detail is painstakingly hand-crafted; from fitting the halo precisely to every facet of the diamond to meticulous finishing, these seemingly simple procedures actually take several hours for completion.
The Emilya ring seen in the photographs above has pear shaped stems that are set with pave and is a creative way to give the ring a unique look like no other. You can also personalize the ring’s side profile with filigree features or even flower petal shaped pave profiles.
The Azi trilogy ring incorporates a modern twist to a vintage ring design. It features a center stone that’s surrounded by 2 tapered baguette cut diamonds. To top things off, U-cut pave set melees provide a refreshing and distinctive feature on the ring’s side profile.
Victor Canera has a special technique of setting side-stones using a groove system which I want to highlight in his trilogy setting designs. By utilizing a groove setting, the need for prong sharing is eliminated and this gives the ring a sleeker and fluid appearance.
This spectacular ring is a great example to showcase hand forged jewelry and illustrates the limitations of traditional CAD/CAM jewelry fabrication. Shown above, the ring features graduated french-cut diamonds that are channel set in the ring’s shank.
Now, I want to bring your attention to the two rows of milgrain found on the edges of the ring. Typical casting techniques will not be able to produce such a fine milgrain feature especially when the gap between the milgrain rows is so small.
Also, there are intricate hand engraved motifs on each side of the ring’s profile which would not be reproducible at such level of details with CAD/CAM. So, if you are looking for a one-of-a-kind vintage style diamond ring, this is a great option for your consideration.
Overall, Victor Canera is a jeweler who scores highly on my personal checklist of being a great vendor. Not only does he knows his stuff, he’s also a super easy person to communicate and work with.
And trust me, you won’t believe the number of jewelers who have poor technical and artistic knowledge despite being in the trade for years.
If you are looking for truly well-made custom engagement rings, you need to understand there are no shortcuts to quality workmanship. Victor Canera’s hand-forged craftsmanship is the reason why he is one of the most sought after person in the industry.
Hi, great review. Any reason why VC only gets 4.5 stars please?
Price points and limited diamond selections. They are working on improving in these aspects though.
What do you think of shopping in the LA diamond district?
It’s not a great place to shop for diamond jewelry. In general, you get generic low quality diamonds at high prices which is pretty ridiculous. If you are in LA, give Victor a visit instead.
I first want to thank you for the tremendous resource you’ve provided for many of us out there who needed a crash course in diamonds. I’ve probably read through your website a handful of times already, and I’m attempting to narrow my choices down. The one area where I am hesitant to move forward on is clarity and reading the images to detect issues. So I was hoping you could take a look at a few diamonds I’ve highlighted and let me know if any of these are keepers or if I should keep looking.
Just a quick background:
1) Cut- I’m planning to use Whiteflash and stick with the ACA cuts
2) Color – G or H, and don’t really want to drop below because I’ve heard mixed results on I colors even with an ACA cut.
3) Carats – my girlfriend keeps pushing for something close to 1.5 or greater, but it’s simply not in the budget especially since I really want to focus on optimal cut. She also doesn’t really know anything about diamonds or the 4cs so I’m pretty much making the pick on the diamond. I have settled on 1.15 to 1.30. Ideally, I’m okay with 1.2 to 1.25.
4) Clarity – This is my area of concern, I simply don’t know what I’m looking at here. I can read the certificate but when it comes to looking at the pics and the videos I don’t know where to start to see if these inclusions will be an issue. They are all listed as eye clean by Whiteflash, but is that reliable?
My budget is growing by the day, but it ranges from I would say $8,500 to a maximum of around $11K and that would only be if that diamond is vastly larger/better than what I can get in the $9,000 to $10,000 range. Here is a link below of a handful of diamonds I’ve narrowed it down to on Whiteflash. I would really appreciate it if you could give me some guidance on if any of these are a solid purchase, particularly when it comes to the clarity.
Also, when I eventually narrow down the diamonds, are there any specific things I can ask Whiteflash to ensure I’m making a strong pick, given that I will be unable to physically view the diamonds in person?
With White Flash, rest assured that you are getting the best of the best. I say this having seen hundreds of different vendors around the world and that speaks volumes.
For eyecleanliness, you can refer to this: https://beyond4cs.com/clarity/resize-technique/
I reviewed all 5 diamonds and think you did extremely well to pick these diamonds out. ALL of them are Eyeclean and top notch in cut quality. So, you do know what you are doing.
Now, these would be the best diamonds to get better value for money in my opinion. #3978037 & #3970286 are stones I would personally buy.
I would go with either of these diamonds. Personally, I value color a little more than carat size. BUT most consumers actually like larger size diamonds. So, pick between these 2 based on your preferences.
Read the article and then click on the 2 links to do the test. I can tell you with confidence that both stones are eyeclean as are the other 3.
Thank you for this article. It was one piece of my research that led me to purchase my Canera Ideal Hearts stud earrings from Victor Canera. I was contemplating the other vendors mentioned but am thrilled that I went with Victor. As soon as I e-mailed an inquiry, I received a return e-mail quickly. The other vendors were good, but told me they’d have to get back to me on a Monday. Every time I e-mailed, VC got back with me super quick. So not only does Victor do exquisite work, he has exceptional customer service, even on a weekend.
I had bad timing with businesses closing down for the COVID-19 virus. Believe me, I want people to be safe but my heart sank knowing I’d have to wait even longer for my studs. Do you know Victor finished up my earrings at a rush, at no extra charge to me, and got them to me in about 10 days total? I was very grateful for the extra attention and am absolutely 1000% pleased with my earrings. I wouldn’t hesitate to go with Victor again. Very professional and gorgeous work.
